SWOT analysis

Strengths:

  • I am a pro-active person so I believe I will do ok with finding new projects to work with.
  • I am also good at accepting challenges and feel I can easily jump into new projects.
  • I am easy to get along with and can work well in groups or with other people.
  • I have good communication skills which will help in making connections and working with fellow practitioners.
  • Working alongside a friend will also help me gain confidence and will be able to swap knowledge and ideas.

Weaknesses:

  • I could improve with my time management which means giving myself more time and making sure I stick to deadlines.
  • I could do with having more connections with the photography industry and promoting myself more.
  • I could have aimed to high and may not be able to achieve all targets/proposals.

Opportunities:

  • Working with professional photographers will expand my connections and knowledge.
  • Working around fellow practitioners will give me the chance to experience what it’s like in the industry.
  • Exhibiting my work online will give a wider audience the chance to see my work.
  • Exhibiting my work in other forms will let me gain response and ideas.
  • Working with other practitioners will increase my knowledge and understanding.

Threats:

  • Other practitioners working within a similar field could cause conflicts and competitiveness.
  • Not setting my deadlines correctly could cause time loss which could then lead to unfinished work/unsubstantial work.
  • I could possible use the wrong form of exhibiting my work therefore meaning I could lose out on my audience and then my photographs not looking how I want them to look.

201mc Project proposal

For my professional experience proposal I have 20 days to conduct either a series of little professional experiences or one big professional experience placement. At the moment I am still unsure in which direction I want to go towards, therefore I am still continuing my research into different forms of experience, such as working with a photographer, working in a photographic studio, working with people who have a similar interests etc.

One form of experience I would like to continue with is working with the Coventry fashion students and getting more experience within the fashion industry because I feel there is a lot more that I can discover within this industry. I also feel, still being undecided as to where I want to head, that it will give me the opportunity to think and decipher whether fashion is somewhere which I want further my photography. With the idea of working with other students I am going to explore other subject matters within the university and also around the city of Coventry. I feel, again, that this may help me narrow down an industry I would like to work within and at the same time will allow me to experience different forms of the industry.

Aswell as doing these small professional experiences I am currently in contact with photographer Peter Dench. I have been in touch with Peter for a while now but have only managed to meet him once which was when he came to do a lecture for my class. I was recently meant to be going down to london to visit him and have a chat but unfortunately his timetable couldn’t match mine and we didn’t manage to meet. I hoping that during the easter holidays I will get the chance to go down to london and see him and hopefully get to work with him, at the moment this is still in discussion. If all goes well I am opting to do this experience within the easter holidays as I feel it will give me more time to focus on this module and it will also not clash with any other of my modules.

I am also currently in the process of speaking with a fellow student in which we would like to work together and produce a series of work. She also happens to be my housemate and the collaboration that we are thinking of working towards is to do with our house and housemates. We want to aim to publish a series of work online consisting of our own individual thoughts and feelings within the house we share, we want to explore the differences between how we both feel whilst living with the same people and in the same environment.

I feel if i follow through with all the proffesional experiences it will lead me to many different opportunities and experiences which I feel I need for me to boost my confidence and allow me to explore all kind of industrys. I feel this will really help me and I am looking forward to what is up and coming for me.

Works Experience

December 2010

Clothes Show 2010, Birmingham clothes event, Event photographer.

My main job at the clothes show was to photograph Coventry Universities fashion students stall. I photographed the students interacting with the customers, promoting the university, selling products and giving away free posters. I also got the chance to walk around the actual event and photograph more of the show. I got the opportunity to shoot a mini catwalk show and walk around and see what other photographers were doing. I feel I gained a lot from doing this work experience and it gave me a big insight into photographing events such as this.

August 2009- present

Cafe Latino, Italian restaurant, Waitress & bar staff.

While working at Cafe Latino I have gained experience with customers and how to help and deal with them, also it has given me the opportunity to Solve and deal with problems on my own. I feel like I have learnt a lot of communication skills due to being on the phone and talking to regular customers. As well as working on my own it has taught to me to work with my fellow staff. My responsibilities included food handling, food service, drinks porter, glass collection, cutlery and crockery preparation, hot drink service, money/bill management, functional arrangements, inter-personal skills, bar work, cleaning, shift preparation, telephone communications, booking arrangements and order taking.

November 2008- May 2009

Altro Mondo, Italian restaurant, Waitress & bar staff.

This was my first job dealing with food and drink and it taught me a lot about customer service and how to deal with customer’s problems and situations. It showed me how to interact not only with customers but with my fellow waitress’s and chefs. Also it gave me the opportunity to improve my communication skills dealing with regular customers and instructions from my other staff. My responsibilities included food handling, food service,  cutlery and crockery preparation, drinks porter, glass collection, functional arrangements, inter-personal skills, bar work, cleaning, shift preparation.

May 2007- September 2008

Johnson’s, Safety clothing company, Junior temp.

Working at Johnson’s helped me a lot with dealing with problems and memorizing lots of different things. I had to take responsibility of orders coming into the office and going out of the office which made me learn to stick to a routine and also follow simple or complicated orders from my fellow staff. With this job I learnt how to take responsibility for certain things and how to deal with these either on my own or with fellow staff. It also helped me with communication skills as I was on the phone and email a lot. My responsibilities included order taking and printing, ITC and phone communication, filing, faxing, posting, sorting mail, daily preparation and photocopying.

Interests and activities

My main interest is photography and I love anything to do with it, I also enjoying going out and socializing and spending time with my family especially my little brother. Also I’m a keen fan of music, fashion, food and culture and spend a lot of time either on the internet looking for new and up and coming things or out and about travelling.
